Fractions are used to denote values other than whole numbers. A fraction has two parts separated by a line. The number in the top is called the numerator and the number at the bottom is called the denominator.
The numerator is the number of parts that are represented and the denominator is the number of parts in the whole.
$$\frac{\mathbf1}{\mathbf5}\boldsymbol,\frac{\mathbf2}{\mathbf7}$$
Fractions can also be denoted as decimals.
The long division method is used to convert the fraction to its decimal form.
In this method, we use the numerator as the dividend and the denominator as the divisor.
We can see that the number 1 is not divisible by 6. Hence we can add a decimal point to the quotient and add 0 to the dividend to make it divisible.
We can see that the same remainder 6 is repeated after the first step. Stop the division as the digits in the quotient are repeated.
The answer to the fraction $$\frac16$$ is 0.16666…
To make the answer into a terminating decimal form we write the number with a bar over the digits that are repeated.
0.16666…. is written as $$0.1\overline6$$
