Open-book does not mean easy. On an open-book electrician exam the code book is sitting right there, and it is still possible to know the material and lose the question: you run out of time, open the wrong article, or read a rule without the condition that changes it. This guide gives you a lookup routine you can run the same way on every code question, plus drills to practice it before exam day.
Why speed matters more than memory
Take the Texas journeyman exam as a concrete example. At the time we checked the PSI Candidate Information Bulletin (September 2026), the NEC Knowledge portion listed 59 items in 130 minutes and the Calculations portion listed 26 items in 110 minutes. That works out to roughly 2 minutes and 12 seconds per knowledge item and about 4 minutes and 14 seconds per calculation item, with little room for a slow index search. Texas is open book with the National Electrical Code as the allowed reference, so the exam measures two things at once: do you know the rule, and can you find and confirm it in the time available. Other states publish their own item counts and time limits in their candidate bulletins; look yours up and do the same division before you plan your practice.
Whatever your per-question budget turns out to be, it is enough for one good lookup and not for a wrong turn plus a good lookup. The routine below is built to prevent the wrong turn.
Know the map of the book first, in your edition
Section 90.3 of the NEC explains how the code is arranged, and that arrangement is the basis of fast lookups. In the 2023 edition it reads, in summary:
- Chapters 1 through 4 apply generally to all installations (definitions, general requirements, wiring and protection, wiring methods and materials, equipment for general use).
- Chapters 5, 6, and 7 cover special occupancies, special equipment, and special conditions. They can modify or supplement the general chapters, which is why a question about a hospital, a marina, or a solar array may have a different answer than the same question about a house.
- Chapter 8 covers communications systems and, in the 2023 edition, stands on its own unless it references another chapter.
- Chapter 9 holds the tables (conductor properties, conduit fill, and similar) and the informative annexes hold explanatory material that is not enforceable.
Edition matters. The 2026 edition reorganized parts of the book: NFPA's reorganization summary lists, among other moves, the load-calculation article (Article 220 in the 2023 edition) relocated to Chapter 1 as Article 120, and describes the independence of Chapter 8 in 90.3 as proposed for removal. Texas exams are referenced to the 2026 NEC as of September 1, 2026 (PSI bulletin updated September 15, 2026). So read 90.3 and the table of contents in the edition your exam names, and treat any article number you memorized from an older edition as something to confirm, not assume. Where this guide names an article number, it says which edition it is from.
Also learn how the NEC talks. Under Section 90.5, mandatory rules say shall or shall not, permissive rules say shall be permitted or shall not be required, and informational notes are explanatory only. A question that asks what is required is never answered by an informational note.
The four-step lookup routine
Step 1. Classify the question before you touch the book
Read the whole question stem, then decide which of four kinds it is. This takes five seconds and decides where you open the book.

Step 2. Choose the fastest entry point
You have three ways into the book, and they are not equally fast.
- Memorized home articles. Pick the articles you open most (definitions, general requirements, branch circuits, load calculations, services, overcurrent protection, grounding and bonding, conductors) and practice opening your book to each one without looking anything up. The numbers depend on your edition: for example, load calculations are Article 220 in the 2023 NEC and Article 120 in the 2026 NEC. Build the list from your own book's table of contents, not from memory of an older edition.
- Table of contents. For an article you do not have memorized, the table of contents at the front is faster than the index because you scan by subject instead of by keyword.
- Index. Use the index when the question uses a specific term you cannot place in an article (a piece of equipment, a location type, a specific device). Look up the noun, not the adjective: search the index for the equipment name first, then narrow by the condition.
Keep a one-line note of which route you took, using whatever the testing vendor provides for notes (PSI provides an electronic notepad for Texas exams; loose paper is not allowed there). If you land in the wrong place, you will know which route to try next instead of repeating the same search.
Step 3. Read the section in context, not just the sentence
Finding the section is half the job. Before you answer, check three things around it:
- The parent section. A subsection like (B)(2) only means something under its parent heading. Read the heading of the section and subsection it belongs to.
- Exceptions, and whether the question wants them. Exceptions follow the rule they modify, so read them; but also read your bulletin's instructions about them. The PSI reference material list for Texas says not to consider code exceptions or optional calculation methods unless the test question specifically directs you to. On an exam with that rule, an exception only changes the answer when the stem points you to it; on the job, or on an exam without that rule, the exception is part of the rule.
- Informational notes. They explain and recommend; they do not require. If the question asks what the code requires, a note is not the answer.
Step 4. Match the qualifiers, then commit
Go back to the stem and confirm every qualifier matches the section you found: the occupancy (dwelling unit, commercial, industrial), the location (wet, damp, dry, outdoors), the load type (continuous, noncontinuous, motor), the voltage and system, and the wording (minimum, maximum, not less than, not more than). If one qualifier does not match, you are probably in a general rule that a special-condition article modifies. Only when all qualifiers match do you mark the answer and move on.
Original practice drills
These are original practice examples written for this guide, not official exam questions. The goal of each drill is to name the entry point and the section, not to recall a value. Run them with your own code book and a timer.
Drill 1. A question asks for the minimum size of an equipment grounding conductor for a branch circuit protected by a 60-ampere overcurrent device. Classify: table question. Entry point: the equipment grounding conductor sizing table in the grounding and bonding article (Table 250.122 in the 2023 NEC; confirm the number in your edition), read by the rating of the overcurrent device. Trap: the stem may add a qualifier such as conductors that were increased in size for voltage drop, which changes the rule.
Drill 2. A question asks whether a receptacle outlet is required at a specific location on a dwelling-unit kitchen countertop. Classify: general-rule question about a dwelling unit. Entry point: the branch-circuit article's receptacle outlet requirements for dwelling units (210.52 in the 2023 NEC; confirm in your edition). Trap: the dimensions in the stem decide the answer; read the subsection that matches the countertop type named (wall counter, island, peninsula).
Drill 3. A question describes a floating dock and asks about receptacle protection. Classify: special-condition question. Entry point: Chapter 5 (marinas, boatyards, and docking facilities, Article 555 in the 2023 NEC), then confirm whether it modifies the general GFCI rules in the branch-circuit article. Trap: answering from the dwelling-unit GFCI rule you already know.
Drill 4. A question asks how many 12 AWG THHN conductors fit in a given trade size of a named raceway. Classify: table question. Entry point: Chapter 9 tables (raceway fill percentages, raceway dimensions, conductor dimensions), or the informative annex tables that combine them. Trap: using the fill percentage for one conductor when the stem describes three or more.
Drill 5. A question uses the phrase "readily accessible." Classify: definition question. Entry point: Article 100. Trap: "accessible" and "readily accessible" are separate defined terms with different meanings; read the one the stem uses.

Tabs, notes, and what the exam room allows
Rules about marking the code book differ by state and by testing vendor, and they are strict. Texas is a useful example of how specific they get. The PSI bulletin (revision dated September 15, 2026) allows a soft-bound NEC that was highlighted, underlined, or annotated before the exam, allows tabs only if they are permanent index tabs manufactured or supplied by the NEC publisher, prohibits homemade tabs and any loose or attached paper, prohibits writing in the book during the session, and does not allow the NEC Handbook. Two separate facts sit in that list and should not be merged: what the questions are based on (the bulletin says the questions are referenced to the 2026 NEC as of September 1, 2026, and are based on the current TDLR-adopted edition) and what you may carry in (any soft-bound edition of the NEC). Being allowed to bring an older soft-bound book does not make it the right book to study or test with; the answers are keyed to the adopted edition. If your state uses a different vendor, read your candidate bulletin for the equivalent list before you tab anything. Tabbing the book the wrong way can mean testing without it.
How to practice this routine
Work the NEC Code topic checkpoint questions with your book open and, for each one, write down the entry point you used and the time it took. Then take the free electrician practice test the same way. The explanations name the concept behind each answer; your job is to add the section reference next to it. After two or three sets, you will have a short list of articles you always open, and those are the ones to tab.
