One way to lose a question you could have answered is to answer a different question than the one on the page. A single word in the stem, such as minimum, except, continuous, or dwelling, changes the correct choice, and under time pressure the eye slides right past it. This guide is a reading method, not a code lesson: a way to make sure the question you answer is the one that was asked. It applies to any NEC-based exam, open book or closed book.
The three-pass read
Reading a question once and jumping to the choices invites misreads. Three quick passes take about fifteen seconds and give the qualifiers a second chance to register before you commit.
- Pass 1: What is being asked? Find the actual question, which is often the last sentence. Restate it to yourself in four or five words: "minimum conductor size," "is a receptacle required," "which statement is false."
- Pass 2: Under what conditions? Go back through the stem and mark every qualifier: occupancy, location, voltage, load type, material, method, size, and any number given. These are the facts the rule will hinge on.
- Pass 3: What is the trap word? Look for the words in the table below. If one is present, say it out loud in your head before you read the answer choices.
Words that flip the answer

Original examples, worked with the method
The examples below are original practice examples written for this guide. They are not official exam questions, and they are built around electrical theory and general facts rather than specific code values so you can check the reasoning yourself.
Example 1: the reversed question. "Which of the following is NOT a required element of a complete circuit? (a) a source of voltage, (b) a closed path for current, (c) a load that converts electrical energy, (d) a ground-fault circuit interrupter."
Pass 1: "which is NOT required." Pass 2: a complete circuit, in general. Pass 3: the trap word is NOT. A source, a closed path, and a load are what every basic circuit needs to carry current. A GFCI is a protective device that may be required by code in particular locations, but it is not part of the definition of a complete circuit, so (d) is the answer. A candidate who skims sees "required element" and picks (a), the first true statement.
Example 2: minimum versus a larger number. "In a simplified study model, a branch circuit supplies a single noncontinuous load of 18 amperes. Using only the rule that the overcurrent device rating shall be not less than the load, and choosing from standard ratings, what is the minimum standard rating? Assume the conductors and equipment are rated for whichever standard size is chosen. (a) 15 A, (b) 20 A, (c) 25 A, (d) 30 A."
Pass 1: "minimum standard rating." Pass 2: 18 A, noncontinuous, a simplified model where the conductor and equipment limits are taken care of. Pass 3: minimum. The rating must be at least 18 A; the smallest standard rating that is not below 18 A is 20 A, so (b). Choice (d) is the misread: it is a larger number, but the question asked for the minimum. Nothing in this example says a larger device is acceptable in a real installation; the conductor ampacity, the equipment rating, and the small-conductor rules decide that, and the stem deliberately set them aside. If the stem had said continuous, the 125 percent rule would apply (18 A times 1.25 equals 22.5 A) and the minimum standard rating would move to 25 A, choice (c). One word, different answer.
Example 3: the hidden condition. "Where a branch circuit supplies a continuous load, the rating of the overcurrent device shall be not less than the noncontinuous load plus what percentage of the continuous load, unless the assembly and its overcurrent device are listed for operation at 100 percent of their rating? (a) 80 percent, (b) 100 percent, (c) 125 percent, (d) 150 percent."
Pass 2 catches the "unless" clause: it describes when the rule does not apply, not what the rule is. The question is still asking for the standard factor, 125 percent, choice (c). A candidate who reads the "unless" clause as the main rule picks (b). The rule and its exception are in the branch-circuit overcurrent protection section, 210.20(A) in the 2023 NEC; confirm the section number in the edition your exam uses, and remember that some bulletins tell you to ignore exceptions unless the question points to them.
Example 4: units and totals. "Three purely resistive loads of 8 amperes, 6 amperes, and 4 amperes are connected in parallel on one 120-volt, single-phase circuit. What is the total current supplied by the source? (a) 4 A, (b) 8 A, (c) 18 A, (d) 2,160 A."
Pass 2: resistive loads on one single-phase source, so all three currents are in phase and add arithmetically. Pass 3: the word is total. 8 plus 6 plus 4 equals 18 A, choice (c). Choice (d) is what you get by multiplying the sum by the voltage, which is volt-amperes, not amperes. Reading the unit in the question ("current," so amperes) and the unit in each choice prevents that. If the stem had described loads with different power factors, the currents would not add arithmetically; that qualifier is exactly what Pass 2 is for.
Example 5: which rule set. "In a dwelling unit, is a receptacle outlet required on a kitchen island countertop that has no sink or cooktop?" The answer depends on the dwelling-unit receptacle rules in the edition your exam is based on, and island receptacle rules have changed between recent editions. The reading lesson is Pass 2: three qualifiers (dwelling unit, kitchen island, no sink or cooktop) tell you exactly which subsection to read. Do not answer from memory of a different edition; read the island subsection in the edition your exam names.
Reading the answer choices
The choices are part of the question. Three habits help:
- Read all four before choosing. Exam writers often put a partially correct choice before the fully correct one.
- Eliminate by unit and magnitude first. If the question asks for amperes, cross out any choice in volt-amperes or watts. If it asks for a conductor size for a 20-ampere circuit, cross out sizes that belong on a service.
- Watch for "all of the above" and "both a and b." These are only right if every referenced choice is right; check each one separately.
When you are not sure
Mark the question, write the trap word and the qualifiers on scratch paper, and move on. When you return, you will re-read the stem with fresh eyes instead of re-reading your own first interpretation. Practice the method
Use the free electrician practice test and, before answering each question, write the three passes down: the ask, the qualifiers, the trap word. It feels slow at first; a suggested exercise is to keep it up for a full set or two and see whether it starts to happen without the writing. When you review, sort every miss into "did not know" or "misread." If the misread pile is bigger, keep doing this drill; if the knowledge pile is bigger, go back to the study guide for the topic.
