Florida 2-15 vs. 2-14 vs. 2-40: Courses and Exams

Florida 2-15 combines health and life authority; 2-14 covers life, including annuities and variable contracts; 2-40 covers health. On the standard approved-course routes, the listed hours are 60, 30, and 40 respectively. Exemptions and prior-license routes must be checked separately.

"Florida life and health license" is not enough information to choose a course or an examination. 2-15, 2-14, and 2-40 identify different resident license types. Their numbers are not ranks, and a course advertised with a similar title may prepare you for a narrower authority than you intended.

This comparison helps a new applicant identify the correct branch of Florida DFS instructions. It is not a recommendation to sell a particular insurance product and does not determine an individual's eligibility.

What is the difference between 2-15, 2-14, and 2-40?

Resident license Broad scope Standard approved-course route
2-15 Health and life, including annuities and variable contracts 60 hours
2-14 Life, including annuities and variable contracts 30 hours
2-40 Health 40 hours

Sources: the DFS qualification documents for 2-15, 2-14, and 2-40. These are the ordinary course pathways, not a statement that every applicant must follow the same route. The documents also describe education/designation alternatives, transfers, and examination exemptions.

A broader scope is not automatically the right purchase for every person. Start with the work and authority required by your intended role, then confirm the correct license with DFS and any relevant employer compliance process. Do not choose only by the smallest number of study hours.

Does 2-14 include health insurance?

The 2-14 qualification document is for life, including annuities and variable contracts. Do not substitute it for the health authority represented by 2-40 or the combined 2-15. Similarly, the 2-40 health license does not become a life license because a course includes a brief discussion of life policies. DFS 2-14; DFS 2-40.

The term "variable contracts" in a license name should not be read as a promise that passing this insurance exam alone completes every other authorization relevant to a product. This comparison addresses the insurance license categories only. Before undertaking actual sales activity, resolve the full requirements for the activity with the appropriate organizations.

Is the 2-15 course 60 hours or the sum of two separate courses?

The standard combined course listed by DFS is 60 hours. The 2-15 document also identifies an alternative path involving the listed life and health prerequisites. Those are distinct qualification routes, so adding the 30-hour and 40-hour figures does not prove that the ordinary combined course must be 70 hours. Source: DFS 2-15 prerequisites.

Original planning example: One applicant selects an approved 60-hour combined course from the outset. Another already has relevant prior education and wants DFS to evaluate a different allowed route. The second applicant should not assume that a receipt from any life-related course automatically replaces the combined prerequisite. Match the exact qualification branch and documentation.

The qualification documents place a four-year timing condition on the listed course completion relative to application. Keep the accepted completion record and check the applicable branch rather than assuming all past training remains valid indefinitely. DFS qualification documents.

Is finishing the course the same as passing the state exam?

No. In the standard course routes, DFS explicitly marks the state examination as required. Completing approved education does not by itself mean that the exam is waived. Some separately listed qualifications do create an exemption, but an exemption must match the applicant's actual circumstances. 2-14 prerequisites; 2-40 prerequisites.

Keep these milestones separate:

Milestone What it does not prove
Course enrollment Completion of the prerequisite
Course completion A passed state exam or an approved exemption
Passed state exam Completion of all licensing processing
License issued That every activity may be performed without the applicable appointment and other requirements

The DFS documents specifically identify appointment requirements. Confirm those before treating a license printout as the final authorization for the intended role.

Can I take a Florida insurance licensing exam online at home?

The DFS examination page says new reservations are for physical test centers and that OnVUE is no longer available for new Florida insurance reservations. An online prelicensing course is not the same thing as an at-home state exam. Confirm the current delivery options in the official booking flow before arranging travel or equipment. Source: DFS examinations.

This distinction is easy to miss in advertising. "Online life and health course" may accurately describe instruction without making any statement about the delivery of the official test. Read the course offer and examination rules as separate documents.

How long is a passing score valid, and can I retake a failure?

DFS states that a passing result is valid for one year and limits attempts at the same exam type to five within a twelve-month period. Licensing processing must be completed within the stated passing-score window. These are Florida rules; do not replace them with Texas's different retake policy. Source: DFS examinations.

Record actual attempt dates, test names, and results. Do not count unrelated practice quizzes as attempts, and do not assume changing the language of the same examination resets the official history. Ask DFS or the testing vendor about your record when the limit is close.

Choose a study plan after choosing the authority

Once the license is clear, use the current corresponding outline. A health-focused plan should not be judged only by how many life-policy definitions it contains. A combined plan needs deliberate coverage of both areas rather than a long generic insurance question list.

For a simple diagnostic, try the deductible and coinsurance practice problems. If you can calculate one claim but reset the deductible incorrectly on the next, that is a concept to fix before increasing speed. If your gap is a Florida licensing rule, return to the Florida source instead of practicing more arithmetic.

Before you buy a course or book an examination

Write down the resident license code, the exact qualification route, the approved provider/course, the required examination, and the remaining application steps. Verify that each document names the same intended authority. This short record prevents a costly mismatch without pretending that all candidates have the same background.
