Worked examples
Practice walkthrough
A perfectly mixed water model combines 2 gallons at 140°F with 3 gallons at 60°F. Assume equal density and specific heat and no heat loss. What is the final temperature?
Answer: 92°F
The energy balance reduces to a volume-weighted average under the supplied assumptions: (2 × 140 + 3 × 60) / 5 = 92°F. A simple average of 140°F and 60°F gives 100°F but wrongly treats the unequal water quantities as equal.

Practice walkthrough
A study model states that water volume increases by 1.8% over a specified heating interval. A closed container initially holds 50 gallons of that water. What additional volume does the model predict?
Answer: 0.9 gallon
The increase is 50 × 0.018 = 0.9 gallon. The final modeled volume would be 50.9 gallons, but the question asks only for the additional volume. The percentage is supplied for this exercise rather than inferred for unspecified temperatures or pressure.
