Worked examples

Practice walkthrough

A sizing exercise assigns design flows of 2 GPM to each of four outlets and 3 GPM to each of two other outlets. It explicitly assumes all six operate simultaneously with no diversity factor. What combined design flow results?

Answer: 14 GPM

The first group contributes 4 × 2 = 8 GPM, and the second group contributes 2 × 3 = 6 GPM. Total simultaneous flow is 8 + 6 = 14 GPM. Do not introduce an unstated demand factor or average the two outlet ratings.

Simultaneous demand (GPM)
The supplied assumption counts every outlet at its stated flow.

Practice walkthrough

In a conceptual drainage model, a trap retains a water seal between a room and a pipe carrying gas. What is the principal purpose of that water seal?

Answer: To form a barrier against gas passing through the drain opening

A retained water seal creates a liquid barrier between the drain passage and the occupied space. It does not serve as a pressure booster or solids-treatment device. A trap and a vent have different functions; the presence of the water seal does not mean pressure effects elsewhere can be ignored.

Conceptual trap function
The retained liquid interrupts the direct gas path.
