Worked examples
Practice walkthrough
A pipe schedule for a drawing exercise labels internal diameter as 1.5 inches and outside diameter as 1.9 inches. Assuming a concentric round wall of uniform thickness, what is wall thickness?
Answer: 0.2 inch
Outside diameter exceeds inside diameter by two wall thicknesses, one on each side. Therefore thickness = (1.9 − 1.5) / 2 = 0.2 inch. The 0.4-inch difference includes both walls across the full diameter. These are supplied dimensions, not a product-standard designation.

Practice walkthrough
A water container holds 36 US gallons. Use a supplied water weight of 8.34 lb per gallon and an empty-container weight of 22 lb. What is the combined weight to the nearest pound?
Answer: 322 lb
Water weight is 36 × 8.34 = 300.24 lb. Add the 22 lb empty container for 322.24 lb, which rounds to 322 lb. A 300 lb answer counts only the water. The conversion is supplied for the exercise and does not address support design or allowable loading.
