Illinois requires insurance producers to pass a licensing exam before selling insurance. Licensing is overseen by the Illinois Department of Insurance (IDOI), which operates as the Division of Insurance within the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) following a 2004 merger, though it keeps its own public-facing site and branding. ExamsLib offers free practice questions and study guides to help you prepare for the Illinois producer exam.

Overview

Exam Overview

The Illinois Department of Insurance (IDOI) licenses resident individual insurance producers by line of authority, including Life, Accident & Health, Property, Casualty, Personal Lines, and Variable Life/Variable Annuity products (which also require FINRA registration). A single producer license can cover multiple lines of authority at once. IDOI is functionally the Division of Insurance within IDFPR after a 2004 merger (Executive Order No. 6), but it still operates its own site at idoi.illinois.gov under Illinois Department of Insurance branding.

Pearson VUE administers the Illinois producer exam, confirmed directly on IDOI's own FAQ page about exam changes. As of that FAQ, remote or online proctored testing ended January 17, 2025, so candidates must now test in person at a physical Pearson VUE center and present a signed prelicense course completion certificate before being admitted.

Scope

License Types

Illinois recognizes the following insurance producer credential types, all issued by IDOI:

  • Resident Individual Producer License - Issued by line of authority: Life, Accident & Health, Property, Casualty, Personal Lines, and Variable Life/Variable Annuity products (which also require FINRA registration).
  • Other producer lines - Including Surety Bail Bond, Title, and Public Adjuster.

A single producer license can cover multiple lines of authority simultaneously.

Eligibility

Requirements

To sit for the Illinois producer exam, IDOI requires:

  • 20 hours of prelicensing education per line of authority you are applying for, with at least 7.5 of those hours completed in a classroom or live web-class format (not fully self-paced).
  • Prelicensing course completion is valid for 12 months, during which your license application must be completed.
  • A fingerprint-based background check through an IDFPR-licensed live-scan vendor.

Requirements can change. Always confirm current licensing rules with IDOI before applying.

Cost

Fees

IDOI does not publish a flat statewide fee figure for prelicensing, exam registration, or the license application on idoi.illinois.gov. Amounts vary by line of authority and are set through NIPR and Pearson VUE's own fee schedules. Confirm current figures directly at the Pearson VUE and NIPR websites before budgeting for your exam.

Plan Ahead

Study Plan

A focused 4 to 6 week study plan works well for most Illinois producer candidates:

  • Week 1-2: Review life and health insurance fundamentals, including policy provisions and underwriting.
  • Week 3-4: Work through property and casualty practice questions, including coverage forms and claims concepts.
  • Week 5-6: Study Illinois insurance regulations and take full-length practice tests, reviewing missed questions before scheduling your in-person Pearson VUE exam.
