Overview

Exam Overview

Electrical fundamentals, grounding and bonding, load calculations, and code-reading skills.

Record the licensing jurisdiction and credential level first. Match the exam bulletin to its specified code edition and amendments before studying code-dependent limits. A national electrical code publication does not establish the licensing rule for every jurisdiction.

Use New Jersey government and agency directory to locate the relevant state agency. For a municipal trade credential, verify the city or county where the work will occur.

Your preparation roadmap

  1. 01

    Build your baseline

Take variants 1-5 without rushing. Classify every missed answer by topic and misconception.

  2. 02

    Strengthen weak topics

Study the weakest topics and complete variants 6-10. Explain the reasoning aloud before selecting a choice.

  3. 03

    Practice with a timer

Use the optional 40-minute practice timer for variants 11-15. Record time spent and distinguish knowledge gaps from rushed reading.

  4. 04

    Review and consolidate

Finish variants 16-20. Rework missed questions from scratch and compare topic-level error patterns. Confirm official exam logistics separately.

Worked examples

Practice walkthrough

For a balanced three-phase load, use P = 1.732 × line voltage × line current × power factor. If line voltage is 208 V, line current is 20 A, and power factor is 0.90, what is real power to the nearest 0.1 kW?

Answer: 6.5 kW

Substitution gives 1.732 × 208 × 20 × 0.90 = 6,484.608 W, or about 6.5 kW. The 7.2 kW choice omits power factor, while about 3.7 kW omits the three-phase factor. Use the line quantities specified in this formula; do not multiply by three again.

Balanced three-phase real power
The stated formula already includes the three-phase factor.

Practice walkthrough

An exam problem explicitly defines a study demand rule: count the first 10 kVA at 100% and any remainder at 50%. A connected load is 26 kVA. Under this rule alone, what is the calculated demand?

Answer: 18 kVA

The first 10 kVA remains unchanged. The remaining 26 − 10 = 16 kVA is counted at 50%, contributing 8 kVA. Total demand is 10 + 8 = 18 kVA. Applying 50% to the entire load would incorrectly reduce the first block. This is a supplied arithmetic rule, not a code requirement.

Supplied demand rule (kVA)
Only the portion above the first 10 kVA receives the supplied 50% factor.
