Worked examples

Practice walkthrough

For a progress-report exercise, earned value is $48,000, actual cost is $60,000, and planned value is $40,000. Using CPI = earned value / actual cost and SPI = earned value / planned value, which interpretation is correct?

Answer: Cost efficiency is below plan; schedule progress is ahead of plan

CPI is $48,000 / $60,000 = 0.80, meaning less earned value per actual dollar than the benchmark of 1. SPI is $48,000 / $40,000 = 1.20, meaning more value earned than planned by this date. These indices describe different dimensions; a project can be ahead in earned progress while spending inefficiently.

Earned-value indices
Below 1 is unfavorable for CPI; above 1 indicates more earned progress than planned for SPI.

Practice walkthrough

A workshop has monthly fixed costs of $9,000. Each completed item sells for $250 and has variable cost of $175. Assuming every item is sold, how many items are needed to break even?

Answer: 120 items

Contribution per item is selling price minus variable cost: $250 − $175 = $75. Fixed costs require $9,000 / $75 = 120 items to cover. Dividing fixed costs by the selling price ignores the variable costs that must also be paid.

Break-even calculation
Only contribution after variable costs is available to cover fixed costs.
