Exam Overview
Estimating, project documentation, business fundamentals, and building-code reasoning.
Separate an individual trade credential from a business registration, contractor license, and permit. Project scope and the location of the work matter. A general study set does not establish that a statewide general-contractor examination exists.
Use Hawaii government and agency directory to locate the relevant state agency. For a municipal trade credential, verify the city or county where the work will occur.

Worked examples
Practice walkthrough
A plan uses a scale of 1/4 inch = 1 foot. A rectangular room measures 3.5 inches by 2.25 inches on the plan. What actual floor area does the plan represent?
Answer: 126 square feet
At this scale, one drawing inch equals four actual feet. The actual dimensions are 3.5 × 4 = 14 ft and 2.25 × 4 = 9 ft. Area is 14 × 9 = 126 square feet. Apply the scale to both dimensions; multiplying drawing area by only four misses one dimension.

Practice walkthrough
A stair exercise specifies a total vertical rise of 112 inches and exactly 16 equal risers. Ignoring all other design checks, what is the height of each riser?
Answer: 7 inches
Equal risers divide the total rise into equal vertical increments: 112 / 16 = 7 inches. The question supplies the riser count and does not ask for a jurisdictional minimum or maximum. A complete real stair design would require additional dimensions and applicable requirements.
