ASVAB Word Knowledge Foundations Study Guide

Develop vocabulary through context, precise synonyms, distinctions in meaning, and practical sentence substitution.

Topic Overview

Read the context first

A word-knowledge question asks for meaning, not just an association. Read the whole sentence and identify what role the word plays. If a technician gives a concise explanation, the explanation is brief and clear; it is not necessarily fast to prepare. If supplies are scarce, availability is limited, which says nothing by itself about their weight or labeling.

Test close alternatives

Substitute a candidate into the sentence and ask whether it preserves the essential meaning. Feasible means practical to carry out, while popular describes approval. Inconclusive means the evidence does not settle the question; it does not mean the evidence was fabricated. Compatible parts can work together without being identical. These distinctions matter when distractors share a loose association with the word.

Build an active vocabulary record

For each unfamiliar word, write a short definition, an original sentence, and a contrast with a nearby but different meaning. Group words by useful relationships: mandatory versus optional, temporary versus permanent, consistent versus contradictory. Review by explaining a word before viewing the choices. Remembering an answer letter from a repeated practice item is weaker evidence of learning than using the word correctly in a fresh sentence.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
  • Choosing a related idea instead of a synonym.
  • Ignoring the sentence when a word has several meanings.
  • Treating uncertainty as proof of falsehood.
  • Memorizing answer positions instead of meanings.
